Erotic Innocence
The culture of child molestation James Kincaid.
When our editor picked up this book from the bookstore where it had been ordered in Waterford City, Ireland, the mature woman assistant, looking at the title, declared "This really makes my stomach sick!" This in a major city bookstore from a dealer in books who does not even yet know what is in the book. This statement makes all other reviews redundant, as it presses home the dire need for books such as Kincaid's to expose the deceptions and deceits of the child sex abuse and child porn industries. As Kincaid's so well puts it, we like to tell stories, and the big story for some time now is about erotic innocence.

A City Possessed

A City Possessed
The Christchurch Civic Creche Case.Lynley Hood.
This is one of those books that gives us hope for the human race. As the Inquisition appears to suffocate us, authors such as Lynley Hood emerge to restore our hopes. Even Hood's initial publisher, Canterbury University Press, wanted to cut and censor the book, so she switched to Longacre Press. The book subsequently won first prize in the non-fiction section of the Montana Book Awards 2002. In 2003 Lynley Hood was awarded a doctorate in literature from the University of Otago for A City Possessed and three other works. Two of the examiners believed that A City Possessed deserved the awarding of a doctorate. The Minister of Justice, Phil Goff, in a spiteful public announcement declared that he would not read her book. Supporting him, Val Sim, his chief legal counsel, prepared a report on Hood's book for Phil Goff, which went counter to the tide of favourable reviews.
As is the case with many of the other authors who dare ask if the Emperor really does wear clothes, this is a woman writing, and perhaps only a male author truly appreciates how much we need women writers bringing sense and justice into what has become a nightmarish world of human sexuality where few men now dare tread.

Nineteen Eighty-Four
George orwell

Orwell's book describes a world in which people are told what to think while the state attempts to gain control of what they think... is it prescient?

Doublethink : the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them. ... To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies—all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.

In a recent "child pornography" case in England, a man was given a six months' jail sentence after pleading guilty to 15 counts of "making an indecent image of a child".... however, the judge accepted that he man was "not party to the making of the photographs".....

No Crueler Tyrannies

No Crueler Tyrannies
Accusation, False Witness, and Other Terrors of Our Times. Dorothy Rabinowitz.

"In 1742, Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, wrote, 'There is no crueler tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of law and in the name of justice'. Two hundred and forty-three years later, in 1985, Dorothy Rabinowitz, a syndicated columnist and television commentator, encountered the case of a New Jersey day care worker named Kelly Michaels, accused of 280 counts of sexually abusing nursery school children -- and exposed the first of the prosecutorial abuses described in No Crueler Tyrannies. The book recalls the hysteria that accompanied the child sex-abuse witch-hunts of the 1980s and 1990s: how a single anonymous phone call could bring to bear an army of recovered-memory therapists, venal and ambitious prosecutors, and hypocritical judges - an army that jailed hundreds of innocent Americans.
"No Crueler Tyrannies is at once a truly frightening and at the same time inspiring book, documenting how these citizens, who became targets of the justice system in which they had so much faith, came to comprehend that their lives could be destroyed, that they could be sent to prison for years - even decades. It shows the complicity of the courts, their hypocrisy and indifference to the claims of justice, but also the courage of those willing to challenge the runaway prosecutors and the strength of those who have endured their depredations."

The New Thought Police
The New Thought Police: Inside the Left's Assault on Free Speech and Free Minds, by Tammy Bruce, Laura C. Schlessinger
This highly praised book deals with the erosion of freedom, the tyranny of hate crime laws, homosexual hate campaigns, the lie of multiculturalism, the hypocrisy of the media and its political terrorism, and the Soviet style behaviour of American universities.

The Death of Right and Wrong
The Death of Right and Wrong: Exposing the Left's Assault on Our Culture and Values by Tammy Bruce
If you believe children should be seduced into warped sexual behaviour by the Gay Elite, if you think confessed murderers should be set free by defence attorneys who know how to wield the race card, if you feel promiscuous gay men should be empowered to spread AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, don’t read this book.
But if you’ve always suspected that factions on the Left are trying to destroy the values that define our civilization, this book proves it. Through its pages, author, activist, and pundit Tammy Bruce takes you inside the chilling world of the Left—a place where morals and decency have been turned on their heads and the crisp distinction between Right and Wrong has been blurred into a mushy, grey mess.

Propaganda is to a democracy what violence is to a dictatorship. The population depends on the media for its information about political affairs, both domestic and foreign. Propaganda is more important and vital to a democratic society because people still have some rights, such as they can talk and express opinions, so the powers that be must ensure that only the correct words come out of the peoples' mouths. In a dictatorship it does not really matter too much what people think, because, whatever they may think, they have to do what they are told, by pain of death.

Not In Front of the Children
Marjorie Heins
The first comprehensive history of the debate about censorship designed to protect children and winner of the ALA's 2002 Eli Oboler Award for best-published work in the area of intellectual freedom
From Huckleberry Finn to Harry Potter, Internet filters to the V-chip, censorship is often based on the assumption that children and adolescents must be protected from ‘indecent’ information that might harm their development, whether in art, in literature, or on a Web site. But where does this assumption come from, and is it true? In Not in Front of the Children, a path-breaking history of ‘indecency’ laws and other restrictions aimed at protecting youth, Marjorie Heins suggests that the ‘harm-to-minors’ argument rests on shaky foundations.

Ray Bradbury
A classic. In this book, firemen don't put out fires - they start them to burn books. Bradbury's vividly painted society holds up the appearance of happiness as the highest goal--a place where trivial information is good, and knowledge is bad. The state allows and encourages slogans and trivial information. People watch TV all day, on wall to wall soap called ‘The Family’, thus anticipating the coming of TV soaps such as Neighbours, Friends, and Coronation Street.

lolita

Lolita
Vladimir Nabokov
The most important aspect of this book from the points of view of this web site may be that it would be a criminal offence today to write, publish and sell it anywhere in the Western world, were it not already a classic, and that the signs are that it may indeed become illegal to sell it or read it, despite it being a classic. It is safe to say that censors everywhere would like to pounce on and criminalize it. That may not be the only or best reason for buying and reading it, but it certainly could be a most important one.
Indeed a strict application of the child pornography laws in many countries already makes it illegal to sell and possess a book such as Lolita. That is has become a classic is therefore a huge embarrassment for many.

battle

The Battle for God
Karen Armstrong
About 40 years ago popular opinion assumed that religion would become a weaker force and people would certainly become less zealous as the world became more modern and morals more relaxed. But the opposite has proven true, according to theologian and author Karen Armstrong, who documents how fundamentalism has taken root and grown in many of the world's major religions, such as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Even Buddhism, Sikhism and Hinduism.
Contrary to popular belief, fundamentalism is not a throwback to some ancient form of religion but rather a response to the spiritual crisis of the modern world. As Armstrong argues, the collapse of a piety rooted in myth and cult during the Renaissance forced people of faith to grasp for new ways of being religious--and fundamentalism was born. Armstrong focuses here on three fundamentalist movements: Protestant fundamentalism in America, Jewish fundamentalism in Israel, and Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt and Iran--exploring how each has developed its own unique way of combating the assaults of modernity.
Fundamentalists do not regard their battle as a conventional political struggle, but experience it as a cosmic war of good and evil.

daycare

The Day Care Ritual Abuse Moral Panic
Mary deYoung
In the United States during the early 1980s, hundreds of day care providers were accused of sexually abusing their young charges in satanic rituals that included blood drinking, cannibalism, and human sacrifice. The panic surrounding the ritual abuse of children has spread quickly to Canada, Europe, and Australasia, and its rapid dispersion has been unimpeded by international investigations that found no evidence to corroborate the allegations and warned that a moral panic was thrusting them into professional public attention.
This work is a sociologically based analysis of the day care ritual abuse panic in America. It introduces the concept of moral panic and analyzes its relevance to the ritual abuse scare, explores the ideological, political, economic, and professional forces that fomented the panic. Also covered are the popular culture representations of day care ritual abuse, the diffusion of the scare to areas overseas, the institutionally symbolic and ideologically contradictory social ends of the panic, and the outcomes of the panic in various settings. The book ends with a discussion of moral panic theory and how it needs to be changed for a complex, multi-mediated postmodern culture, and what lessons can be learned from the scare.
